Bank Holidays
What’s a bank holiday? It
is one of six days in England on which all banks are closed and which are
usually holidays for schools, offices. One of such holidays is Christmas Day,
December 25-th.
Many people look on
Christmas as the time to celebrate the birth of Christ.
Some of Christmas customs
are the same in different countries. In England children wear all sorts of
costumes. They walk along the streets at Christmas time singing and dancing and
sometimes even giving little plays. For this, people ask them into their homes
and give them plenty of sweet things.
This is very much like the
Russian custom. It’s a custom in England for everybody to send Christmas cards to
their friends before Christmas. It’s also a custom in England to give friends
and relatives presents on the day after Christmas Day. This day is called
Boxing Day, because at one time the presents were in boxes.
Two of the bank holidays
fall on Easter. Easter is a spring holiday. It doesn’t come on the same day
every year. Most schools in England are closed for a week or two, and many
shops and offices are closed for four days. Of course, Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays.
The other two holidays are
Spring Bank Holiday and August Bank Holiday..

II Reading (Чтение) Текст “An
Eistedfod”
Every year, in August, there is a
national Eistedfod in Wales. What is Eistedfod? It is a meeting of Welshmen
interested in Welsh poetry, Welsh songs and music. One year it is in a town in
North Wales, the next year it is in a town in South Wales. It lasts for a week.
Between 10,000 and 15,000 people come to an Eistedfod every day. Some want to
listen to the poems; some want to listen to the singing; and some want just to
meet their friends and talk in Welsh. The Welsh people from many countries come
back to Wales for the National Eistedfod. You won’t hear much English at an
Eistedfod.
There are competitions at an Eistedfod,
too; for the best Welsh poem and song of the year; and for the best singers.
The competitions are organized by the Druids. The druids wear long clothes;
their leader is always a poet.
About a hundred years ago, some Welsh
people became very interested in the old traditions and ceremonies at the Eistedfod.
Welsh traditions are very old, and the
Welsh people are very proud of them.
